Employee influenza vaccination challenge issued

Posted: 9/17/14

During the 2013-2014 flu season, OHA member hospitals were challenged by the OHA Council on Quality and Patient Safety to achieve a 92 percent or greater employee vaccination rate. While 97 hospitals participated, 61 hospitals (list below) met the goal of 92 percent or greater. The overall rate for the participating hospitals was 96.2 percent!

For the 2014-2015 flu season, the council is challenging OHA members to reach a 96 percent or greater employee vaccination rate. Those that achieve this will receive an individualized press release for their community, a certificate to display and recognition in Hotline.

The OHA board of directors created a position statement in 2011 supporting mandatory employee influenza vaccinations as a condition of employment. Several Oklahoma hospitals have adopted this policy with little resistance from employees. The key is communication and OHA has developed a toolkit to help with implementation. It can be found at www.okoha.com/vaccinationtoolkit

The 2014-2015 season will be the third season for which CMS requires that hospitals report their rates of employee vaccinations. This measure is publicly reported on Hospital Compare and will affect a hospital’s APU in 2015. This measure is also eligible to become a part of the value based purchasing program. Therefore, it is in a hospitals best interest to implement policies that will assure a high employee vaccination rate.

The ultimate purpose for hospital employee vaccinations for any disease is the protection of both the patient and the employee. Please consider this important issue and join the already participating OHA member hospitals in protecting our patients.
