Oklahoma Sepsis Collaborative year one results in 299 potential lives saved

Posted on: 9/21/16

The Oklahoma Sepsis Collaborative yielded tremendous results during the July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016 project period. This project strived to decrease the sepsis mortality rate by 15 percent by focusing on early identification and early treatment of sepsis. Every one-hour delay in sepsis treatment increases the risk of mortality by 7 percent. The project was funded in part by the Telligen Community Initiative to initiate and support, through research and programs, innovative and farsighted health-related projects aimed at improving the health, social well-being and educational attainment of society, where such needs are expressed.

Twenty-six hospitals registered to participate and 18 hospitals submitted data for analysis, yielding the following results:
  • 253,256 patients were screened for sepsis from Oct. 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016.
  • 2,420 (1 percent) screened positive for sepsis resulting in opportunity for early treatment.
  • The sepsis mortality rate in the participating hospitals dropped from 15.1 percent to 9.54 percent, representing a 36 percent relative risk reduction in sepsis mortality (baseline data obtained from the 2013 Inpatient Discharge Data - Public Use Data File Health Care Information Oklahoma State Department of Health.)
  • 299 potential lives saved based upon data analysis of project data submission as compared to 2013 baselines data.

Hospitals continue to submit sepsis data. The Oklahoma Sepsis Collaborative Year Two will begin on Oct. 1 and will focus on early treatment of sepsis based upon evidence-based interventions. Recruitment will be open to all Oklahoma hospitals. (LaWanna Halstead)
