The Second Session of the 56th Legislature begins Feb. 5th. Lawmakers have until Jan. 18 to file bills and joint resolutions to be considered during the session. Senate rules permit members to file bills after the deadline.
Additionally, House Speaker Charles McCall, Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Schulz, House Appropriations and Budget Committee Chair Kevin Wallace, and Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Kim David, are permitted to file bills at any time.
Lawmakers in both chambers have until Dec. 8 to request drafting of bills and joint resolutions.
Prior to the 2016 legislative session, the Second Session of the 55th Legislature, 2,413 bills and joint resolutions were requested, 1,245 in the House and 1,168 in the Senate.
More than 1,990 bills and joint resolutions were carried over from the First Session of the 56th Legislature and are eligible to be considered during its second session.
