Medicare RAC to resume audits
Posted on: 2/22/17
Oklahoma hospitals will soon begin to receive requests for medical record copies under the restarted Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program.
For a contingency fee, RACs identify overpayments and underpayments made by Medicare to hospitals and other providers. Medicare’s RAC program has had little activity in recent months, but that is about to change. CMS awarded new RAC contracts in November 2016 and the new RAC operations are about to launch.
The RACs will be operating under new federal guidelines, including new limits to their requests for records. RACs will be held to higher standards for accuracy.
The RAC for Oklahoma hospitals is Cotiviti. The same company, then known as Connolly, had the previous RAC contract for Oklahoma.
Novitas Solutions will host a webinar at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 27, in which Cotiviti will explain some notable differences between this RAC contract and the prior, highlight some key timeframes with the auditing process that every Medicare provider should know, and review the resources that Cotiviti supplies providers.
