New Medicare card update
Posted on: 4/4/18
Beginning in April 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will mail new Medicare cards to all people with Medicare, in phases by geographic location. The first waves of card mailings will go to Medicare beneficiaries in some mid-Atlantic and west coast states. Oklahoma will be included in a future wave of card mailing starting after June 2018.
The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 required CMS to remove Social Security Numbers from all Medicare cards by April 2019. A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on the new Medicare cards for Medicare transactions like billing, eligibility status, and claim status.
During a transition period of April 2018 through Dec. 31, 2019, providers can use either the HICN or the MBI to exchange data with CMS.
