Patient data initiative to be explored Feb. 20
Posted on: 2/14/18
OHA is excited to announce that it is considering a major patient data initiative to provide members with powerful tools for understanding their patients, their market, their service lines, their competition, and more. Members are invited to hear presentations and offer thoughts at the OHA offices on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Based on discussion at its Jan. 18 meeting, the OHA board of directors is considering a major investment to jump-start this program, and we need members’ opinions to guide this decision.
In states where timely data is available from hospital claims, hospitals find it invaluable for strategic planning, market share analysis, community health needs assessment, and more. This data would also be an important resource for OHA’s use in policy formulation and understanding of trends in hospital care.
The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) requires acute and rehabilitation hospitals to submit patient discharge data annually. OSDH produces a de-identified subset of this data for hospital and research use, but only after long delays. For example, information on January 2016 hospital patients was only released by OSDH in January 2018. A voluntary, private data sharing arrangement could provide this information to participants much sooner, with quarterly updates. It might also include additional claim information not released by OSDH, such as physician and payor identification, while still safeguarding patient privacy.
On Feb. 20, we will have presentations by two companies that offer patient data collection and analytic services to hospitals: iVantage Health Analytics and the Hospital Industry Data Institute (HIDI), a subsidiary of the Missouri Hospital Association. We will ask attendees for their thoughts on the proposed programs.
