State Legislature remains in session

As Oklahomans grapple with COVID-19 in a myriad of ways, the Legislature remains in session. Next week, the House and Senate will continue working remotely with no committee or floor activity scheduled. We can expect to see a revenue shortfall in the current budget year due to the economic impact of COVID-19. At this time, the governor has stated he plans to utilize the state’s Rainy Day Fund or Revenue Stabilization Fund to cover the FY2020 shortfall. Some lawmakers are forecasting a shortfall for FY2021 as well. The governor has indicated that while he and legislative leaders continue to craft the FY2021 budget, both reserve funds will play a critical role in keeping the state on solid financial ground.

As our lawmakers and the governor continue ramping up the state’s response to COVID-19, it becomes less and less likely that they will address any legislation that does not impact the state’s response to this pandemic. OHA will keep you apprised of the situation at the Capitol as this session continues to unfold. (Scott Tohlen)
