Ascension St. John Jane Phillips, Bartlesville, is the next hospital to be featured in the WorkHealthy Hospitals (WHH) Spotlight series. The series features hospitals in OHA’s WHH initiative, a grant program of TSET. Efforts of featured hospitals encompass the spirit of employee well-being and they stand out from the crowd.

The issue of health care worker burnout is well known and has recently become even more highlighted. Hospital leaders must focus on the wellbeing of their workforce to ensure high quality patient care and reduce the risk of employee burnout and turnover. Providing opportunities for professional fulfillment is one way to combat this burnout and increase engagement. This year, WHH added a “Professional Fulfillment” dimension to the online assessment that measures how hospitals prioritize a culture of wellbeing for their employees. Professional Fulfillment encompasses areas of personal resilience, culture of wellness, and professional efficacy.

What sets them apart…
Ascension recognizes the importance of professional fulfillment by cultivating growth opportunities for their passionate, dedicated, and mission-minded associates. They strive to nourish individual strengths and keep associates employed within the health system. To do this, they created a program called “myCareer.”

The myCareer platform utilizes a five-minute career profile in which Ascension associates inform human resources and nurse career coaches of individual career aspirations, preferences, and even desired geographic region. Completion of this profile allows Ascension career coaches to inform associates of job openings that may interest them. If an associate wants or needs to move to another geographical location, myCareer offers the ability to see other Ascension job openings in their desired location.

The myCareer platform is available to all Ascension employees and utilization of its services is encouraged. The associate’s information is shared only with a career coach, although associates are encouraged to discuss their preferences and ambitions with their immediate supervisor. The myCareer service has been utilized in associate location transfers and internal hospital transfers alike. Associates have shared gratitude for the platform as a way to advance their careers and they have reported that the service was seamless and supportive.

In a time of increased disruption within the health care industry, support and commitment to employees must also increase. Ascension’s myCareer platform helps the health care system by increasing employee retention and growth while also showing associates that they are valued members of the team.
