OHA to seek grant to supplement enhanced burnout mitigation strategies and resilience support

The burnout epidemic continues to pervade the health care workforce, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the stress placed on health care teams. While clinicians continue to show resilience in the face of such adversity, they are still susceptible to burnout.

OHA’s WorkHealthy Hospitals (WHH) team, a grant program of TSET, has developed a multi-layered approach to address the systematic issues that cause burnout and provide additional resources to promote resilience on the individual level.

The WHH team has added a Professional Fulfillment dimension in the online WHH assessment and created a Thriving Workforce Resource Hub that provides a host of free organizational and individual resources for hospitals leaders and clinicians. Recently, the WHH staff also became trained to deliver the evidence-based Personal Resilience Enhancement Plan (PREP) trainings to hospitals.

Clinicians can strengthen their personal protective factors to help mitigate burnout and stress. In a 2017 Workplace Resilience Survey, the American Heart Association asked 1,000 adults for their perception of resilience training. Seventy-six percent perceived resilience training to be valuable. A large majority (86% and above) of employees who had been offered a resilience training program said that they believe their employer is committed to the well-being (94%), mental health (91%), stress management (90%), physical health (90%), and heart health (86%) of employees.

OHA and the WHH team continue to evaluate the best tools and resources to help support the vital health care workforce. The proposed grant would allow OHA to provide these additional resources:

PREP training
• This is an evidence-based training to enhance personal protective factors of priorities, purpose, perspective, and personal responsibility. It is a five-hour training that can be offered in person or virtually. CEUs for this training are expected to be approved.

Outcomes-based measurements provided and analyzed
• Measurement of organizational support for all dimensions of well-being, including professional fulfillment, using the WorkHealthy assessment.
• Aggregate data on burnout for participants using Maslach Burnout Inventory assessments.
• Pre- and post-assessments for training effectiveness.
