Rural Emergency Hospital Designation

Rural Emergency Hospitals (REHs) were established as a new provider type by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 in an effort to address concerns that certain rural hospitals would not be able to sustain operations and communities would suffer from a loss of critical health care services. Under the new REH designation, CAHs and certain rural hospitals have the opportunity to convert to a REH, allowing those entities to continue to provide certain essential health care services to the communities they serve without providing the full suite of inpatient acute care services.
