House, Senate reduce bills and resolutions to 850

Posted on: 3/21/18

Thursday, March 15, was the deadline for bills and joints resolutions to be considered in their chamber of origin. After measures passed from committees in the originating house, 1,120 bills and joint resolutions were available for consideration. At the end of the week, 850 were left for consideration by the opposite House.

Lawmakers filed 1,953 bills and joints resolutions in advance of the Jan. 18 deadline to pre-file legislation for consideration during the 2018 regular session. Approximately 1,990 were carried over from the 2017 regular session. One more bill was filed after the session began.

The deadline for bills and joint resolutions to be heard in an opposite chamber’s committee is April 12 in the Senate and April 19 in the House. The next floor deadline, by which Senate bills need to be heard by the full House and House bills need to be considered by the full Senate, is April 26. That means the House could have a mix of committee meetings to consider bills and floor sessions where bills are taken up in order to meet those deadlines.
