November is American Diabetes Month – time to raise awareness

November is American Diabetes Month and here are some facts about diabetes:
- In the U.S., 30 million adults are living with diabetes.
- 84 million Americans are living with pre-diabetes. (Pre-diabetes is identified when your blood sugar level is higher than normal but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.)
- One in four adults 65 and older is estimated to have diabetes.
- One in two adults is estimated to have pre-diabetes.
- Persons with pre-diabetes and diabetes are at risk for heart disease and stroke.
American Diabetes Month is a great time to raise awareness about diabetes risk factors and encourage people to make healthy changes. You can make a difference by using a
toolkit to provide resources for your community, patients, and organizations like schools, health care providers and health departments, to raise awareness of the importance of preventing diabetes.
This toolkit is full of ideas to help you take action today, including:
- Add a web badge to your website.
- Add information about preventing type 2 diabetes to your newsletter.
- Tweet about American Diabetes Month.
- Host a community event where families can be active while learning about local health resources.
- Join the American Diabetes Association in celebrating American Diabetes Month.
Help your staff, patients and community assist persons to make healthy changes and lower their risk of developing diabetes, and celebrate American Diabetes Month.
