HRSA announces rural residency grant program

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced a new grant funding program focused on increasing opportunities for physician residents in rural communities. The HRSA Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Program is a multi-year initiative. Grant applications are due on June 30.

HRSA will make 11 awards of up to $750,000 each to support the development of new, sustainable rural residency programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. Eligible applicants are domestic public or private non-profit entities including domestic faith-based and community-based organizations, tribes, and tribal organizations. Specifically, these organizations include: 1) rural hospitals, 2) rural community-based ambulatory patient care centers, including federally qualified health centers (FQHC), community mental health centers or rural health clinics, 3) health centers operated by the Indian Health Service, tribe or tribal organization, or an urban Indian organization; 4) graduate medical education consortiums, including schools of allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine, and 5) entities such as faith-based and community-based organizations, capable of carrying out the grant activities (ACGME).
